Learning to See: The Birth of ‘Serene Landscapes in Savage Color’
“Galvanized”
For years, I believed I could never truly honor nature in my paintings. The vastness, the intricacy—it intimidated me. But as I spent years teaching, I often told my students, "You can paint anything; it's just about learning to look." And then, one evening during the stillness of COVID, I finally heard myself say it.
Sitting on my patio, gazing at Santa Fe’s vast skies ablaze with sunset, I prayed into the sky. I reached for a neglected soft pastel, and something shifted. A new language emerged—bold, expressive, a fusion of serenity and raw intensity. That moment gave birth to my ‘Serene Landscapes in Savage Color’ series. The first pieces, intimate in scale, sold out immediately. Now, I am expanding them to monumental sizes—48”x72” and beyond—with sweeping gestures and fearless movement.
I have found new joy in painting, a new way to honor what I see. My hope is that these works bring you the same joy, that they become gifts from my eyes to yours.
