Your Medium Is Your Lover

Art, like desire, begins in the body before it lives in the mind.

We do not choose our artistic medium. Our medium chooses us—through touch, sensation, and surrender.
To create is to feel. And feeling is not intellectual. It is sensual. A whisper along the spine. A weight in the wrist. A quiver in the fingertips.

When I enter the studio, I am not deciding what to paint.
I am listening—Body -first.
Does my wrist crave the gliding swipe of oil across linen?
Or do my fingers ache for the powdery crumble of pastel, broken like bone?

Choosing a medium is like choosing a lover.
Some mornings, I want to box, to strike, to spar—then it’s graphite, charcoal, a tool that meets my energy in full combat.
Other days, I seek flow, breath, expansion—and my hand reaches instinctively for watercolor, gouache, a Japanese calligraphy brush soaked with intention.

Art lives in the body. Not the brain.
Your creative truth resides in your hips, your shoulders, your breath. Just as your lover knows your rhythm by heart—your brush must meet you with that same intimacy.

Today, I watched a student fall in love.
He had been sketching in chalk and pencil for weeks—refined, but restrained. And today, with the flick of a dense calligraphy brush, he met the ecstatic clarity of watercolor.
It didn’t pour like pigment.
It danced—dissolving line into form, dissolving thought into touch.

His eyes widened. His breath caught. His chest opened.
It was not a lesson. It was a moment of intimacy.
With his art. With his body. With himself.

Do you play the piano?
An upright? Or a baby grand?
The music lives in the keys—but the sensation lives in the body.
The wood. The reverb. The weight beneath your fingers.

Art is no different.
It’s not what you see that matters.
It’s what you feel when your body meets the medium.

Your brush is not a tool. It is a lover.
Let it lead you. Let it move you. Let it make you ache with its honesty.
